Pupils Bring Church Grounds Back to Life

Schoolchildren from Holy Cross Primary recently helped to spruce up the grounds of Holy Cross Church, making them a more attractive place for local residents and churchgoers to visit.

The youngsters had fun planting a variety of rose bushes, shrubs and bedding plants to decorate the church grounds, and were accompanied by students from St Helens College, local volunteers and the re:new team.

Funded from the re:new Community Chest, the planting event was the second of a two-phase project to tidy up the church gardens which were previously overgrown and litter-strewn.

Peter Anderton, re:new Neighbourhood Manager said: "It has been great seeing local children get involved in this project and contributing to making it a huge success. We've been able to make a big improvement to the look of the church grounds, and it's no surprise that we have received lots of compliments from local residents and members of the church. Through these events we have also been able to recruit volunteers who will help out with the care of the grounds on an ongoing basis."

This was the first step in rejuvenating the appearance of the church in preparation for its 150th anniversary celebrations which will be taking place in 2012. The School's involvement in the upkeep of the gardens is set to continue as it has been awarded responsibility for one of the planting areas.

If you would like to get involved in any future environmental or clean-up days please contact the re:new office on 01744 281 81.
