Tackling anti-social behaviour

What we promised in 2002:

  • Develop the Council's current services which tackle anti-social behaviour and improve community safety on estates

What we did

This was one of the most important issues concerning tenants at the time of transfer. In answer to their request we set up a dedicated and skilled Anti-Nuisance Team to work with tenants, residents and partner agencies to reduce the levels of anti-social behaviour on our estates. The team's successes to date so far include:

  • 64 possession orders
  • 79 evictions or properties abandoned after successful court action
  • 8 Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) and 8 Anti-Social Behaviour Injunctions (ASBIs)

In addition, our neighbourhood teams work closely with tenants, Tenancy Enforcement Officers and external agencies to address low level nuisance behaviour and breaches of tenancy conditions on our estates. Many nuisance cases are resolved in the first instance due to early intervention from neighbourhood staff which means that further involvement from the Anti-Nuisance team is prevented.

We have also set up a programme of preventative measures too with the introduction of 'Pathways for Young People'. This is a project based programme which aims to steer youths away from a life of crime and encourages them into education, employment or training. Included within the Pathways projects is Evolution which has attracted regional and national acclaim as a pioneering programme that challenges young people's perceptions of criminal lifestyles. The feedback from the programme has been excellent and it has changed the lives of several young people for the better.

We hold a whole host of events throughout the year to occupy the children and young people on our estates and have also introduced the Dream Team programme to reward positive action within our communities. As part of the Dream Team, young people take part in helpful community activities such as litter picking and are rewarded with points for their participation. These can then be exchanged for fun activities such as ten pin bowling and trips to the cinema.
